Dermatological examination (skin examination)

In 30 minutes, insight into your skin.

What is examined in a dermatological examination?

Not all skin damage can be recognized or seen with the naked eye. That's why at Prescan you can have a preventive dermatological examination. We check all the moles on your body and other suspicious spots. Immediately after the examination, the dermatologist discusses the results with you. This way, you know right away where you stand.

What does a skin examination offer me?

A dermatological examination can provide insight into the condition of your skin and maps out noticeable or suspicious skin changes. You will receive advice on the frequency of follow-up examinations, skincare, and sun protection. We also inform you if we see anything that requires further action. All examination results are easily, always, and everywhere available in your personal portal.

Provides insight into

A preventive skin check is intended to detect potential problems at an early stage, but if you experience symptoms or notice unusual changes, you should always contact your general practitioner.

  • A dermatological examination provides insight into the condition of your skin and identifies noticeable or suspicious skin changes.
  • We look for signs of pigmentation spots and sun damage, so you can take timely steps to protect your skin. You will also receive advice on sun protection.

This skin check not only gives you insight into possible problems but also helps you keep your skin healthier. For more information about preventive medical examinations, Prescan recommends consulting the following independent sources:

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Preventive approach to help avoid skin conditions.
  • The dermatologist can provide advice on how to best care for your skin. This includes tips on sun protection, hydration, and treating skin issues such as eczema or acne.
  • The preventive skin examination can help you stay more aware of changes in your skin, such as moles that change in shape, colour, or size. This can enable you to take action more quickly if you notice something unusual.
Cons
  • A preventive skin check can sometimes lead to the detection of benign abnormalities that pose no real risk. This can cause unnecessary worry or anxiety, especially if further tests are needed to rule out something serious.
  • In some cases, harmless spots may be mistakenly considered risky, leading to unnecessary biopsies or treatments. This can result in stress and medical procedures that turn out to be unnecessary. Prescan will never initiate a biopsy or treatment itself but will refer you to a specialist if needed.

Alternatives

For skin abnormalities that cause symptoms, we advise you to contact your GP. Prescan focuses on preventive skin checks and is not intended for investigating existing complaints.

(Not offered by Prescan)

Possible alternatives include: Self-examination: regular self-inspection of the skin, especially moles and suspicious spots, as a supplement to professional checks. Skin scans with advanced technologies such as UV or infrared scans, which can examine deeper skin layers to detect hidden damage or issues.

Risks

  • A skin examination, such as a preventive skin check, is a safe and non-invasive procedure, and therefore carries no risks.

Technical description

At Prescan, the dermatological examination is performed using the FotoFinder Vexia, a system used for imaging the skin. The examination begins with a visual inspection, during which the dermatologist maps out any skin conditions using video dermoscopy.

The device is equipped with a camera that captures high-resolution images, both on a macro and microscopic level. These images are used to analyse any skin conditions. The camera can operate with or without skin contact and provides both polarised and non-polarised images, offering greater insight into vascular structures and skin patterns.
