Health in women changes throughout different life stages

2 hours ago reading time 2 minutes

Health does not develop statically, but changes throughout life under the influence of hormones, lifestyle, environmental factors, and other health factors. In women, physical processes can therefore have different meanings at various stages of life.

The menstrual cycle, pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause not only affect hormonal regulation, but can also be associated with changes in energy balance, fat distribution, cardiovascular health, and metabolism.

"Life phase is not background information, but part of how health should be interpreted."
Dr. I. Arts

That is exactly why there is increasing attention to health in conjunction, where hormonal, cardiovascular, and gynecological factors are assessed together.

The Menstrual Cycle as a Hormonal Mirror

The menstrual cycle reflects complex hormonal processes that affect multiple systems in the body. Changes in energy, mood, sleep, appetite, or physical endurance may vary throughout the cycle.

Even the normal menstrual cycle provides important information about hormonal regulation and physical balance. Changes in regularity, duration, or blood loss may sometimes fit within physiological variation, but in certain situations, they may prompt a broader assessment of health.

That does not mean every change is immediately abnormal. However, there is growing insight that hormonal signals are part of a broader medical context.

Pregnancy as a Physiological Stress Test

During pregnancy, the body undergoes significant hormonal, cardiovascular, and metabolic changes in a short period. As a result, pregnancy complications can provide information about future health risks.

Therefore, pregnancy complications and later risks should be included within broader cardiovascular and metabolic assessments.

Menopause as a Phase of Change
In the years around menopause (perimenopause), the hormonal balance gradually shifts. This can lead to changes in fat distribution, sleep, mood, energy regulation, and cardiovascular processes.

Hormonal fluctuations are also associated with changes in metabolism, body composition, and cardiovascular health during this life phase.

Many processes occur gradually without a clear boundary between normal aging and medical risk transition. As a result, there is increasing attention to health assessment within a broader context.

"Complaints often only gain significance when life stage and hormonal context are taken into account."
Dr. K. van Katwijk

Assessing Health in Context

Increasing medical insights show that women's health is not solely about isolated complaints or separate metrics. Hormones, vascular function, metabolism, and gynecological health continuously influence each other throughout different life stages.

By explicitly considering this context, a more complete picture of health emerges that aligns better with the female life course and the context in which physical changes occur.
