What is contrast fluid in an MRI?
In some MRI examinations in hospitals or other clinics, a contrast agent is used. This agent usually contains gadolinium and is administered into a blood vessel via an IV. It ensures that certain organs, blood vessels, or abnormalities become more visible on additional MRI images.
"Contrast fluid" is the term many people use. Medically, we usually refer to it as a contrast agent.
The contrast agent used in an MRI is different from the usually iodine-containing contrast agent for a CT scan. At Prescan, none of these contrast agents are used for MRI examinations.
Why doesn't Prescan use contrast agents?
Prescan’s MRI examinations are designed to produce relevant images of the examined body area without the use of contrast agents. The MRI scanner itself can make clear distinctions between organs and types of tissues visible.
Contrast agents are only used when they can provide demonstrable additional information for a specific medical question. The preventive and targeted MRI examinations offered by Prescan are conducted entirely without contrast as standard.
This means for you:
- you will not receive a contrast agent;
- no IV is needed for the MRI scan;
- no kidney function check is needed because of contrast administration;
- considerations like a previous reaction to MRI contrast agent do not apply to examinations at Prescan;
- you won't experience any side effects from contrast agents after the examination.
An MRI without contrast is not automatically less accurate or incomplete. Whether contrast is necessary always depends on the purpose of the examination. The examinations offered by Prescan are specifically designed to be conducted without contrast agents.
What is the difference between an MRI with and without contrast?
An MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the body. No X-rays are used.
In an MRI without contrast, images are solely produced with the MRI scanner and various scan settings. This allows many differences between organs, tissues, joints, and blood vessels to be depicted.
In an MRI with contrast, a gadolinium-containing agent is administered via an IV. The radiologist can then observe how certain tissues or anomalies absorb the contrast agent. This can provide additional information for specific diagnostic questions, such as the boundaries or blood flow of an anomaly.
An MRI with contrast is not inherently better than an MRI without contrast. Contrast only adds value when needed to answer a specific medical question.
Can an MRI without contrast reliably provide images?
Yes. For many MRI examinations, contrast agents are not needed to create clear and well-assessable images. The MRI scanner can already differentiate between various types of tissues without contrast agents.
The radiologist evaluates the images taken during the examination. If something is observed that requires further investigation, it is noted in the report. If necessary, the radiologist recommends additional examinations.
It is important to differentiate between the examination offered by Prescan and any subsequent investigations. For the MRI examination at Prescan, contrast agents are not required. In follow-up investigations into a specific anomaly, a doctor or radiologist outside of Prescan may still recommend using contrast.
What happens if the radiologist sees something abnormal?
After the MRI scan, a radiologist evaluates the images. If a potential anomaly is visible, they describe what was seen and whether further investigation is advised.
Sometimes additional images or another type of investigation is needed to better assess a finding. Depending on the finding, this could be a targeted MRI with contrast agent, a CT scan, ultrasound, or other medical investigations.
Prescan does not conduct MRI examinations with contrast agents. When follow-up investigation is necessary, you discuss the advice from the radiology report with your GP or medical specialist. They will determine the appropriate next step with you.
