An MRI scan produces detailed images and can therefore also reveal abnormalities that were not specifically being looked for. We call these incidental findings or chance findings.
Many of these findings are harmless or require no treatment. However, sometimes the radiologist cannot immediately determine with certainty what a finding means based on the MRI images. In such cases, monitoring or additional examination may be advised.
During an MRI scan at Prescan, you are allowed to wear comfortable clothing that contains no metal. Think of underwear, a plain T-shirt, jogging pants or sports trousers without zippers and buttons, and socks.
Avoid wearing clothing with metal components, such as zippers, press studs, hooks, underwires, or metal decorations. Also, carefully check sports clothing: some garments contain hidden metal fibers, metallic prints, or metal parts in cords and closures.

In most cases, you can undergo an MRI scan with a fully healed tattoo or permanent makeup. At Prescan, tattoos, microblading, and permanent makeup must be at least 12 weeks old.
Yes. At Prescan, all jewelry, piercings, and watches must be removed before the MRI scan. Preferably do not bring them to the clinic or remove them before the examination.
An MRI scanner operates with a very strong magnetic field and radio waves. Metal objects can interfere with image quality and, depending on the material, may move or heat up. Electronic devices like smartwatches can also be damaged.
Even if you think a piece of jewelry is not magnetic, you must remove it. The MRI technician cannot always determine with certainty what metals or alloys a piece of jewelry is made of from the outside.
No, in many cases you can undergo an MRI scan even with claustrophobia. It is important that you inform us in advance if you are afraid of small or enclosed spaces. At Prescan, we perform all MRI scans without contrast agents. Therefore, you will not receive any contrast fluid during the examination, and no IV is necessary.
With modern MRI techniques, we can visualize many organs, tissues, joints, and blood vessels in detail without contrast agents. Our MRI examinations and scan protocols are specifically designed for this.
If the radiologist sees an anomaly on the images that requires further investigation, the examination report may advise follow-up investigation through your GP or medical specialist. In some situations, an MRI with contrast agents may be necessary. This follow-up examination does not take place at Prescan.
That depends on the type of hair extensions and the method used to attach them. Some hair extensions contain metal clips, rings, beads, or threads. These must be removed before the MRI scan. Below, we explain more about which extensions are generally not allowed in the MRI.
Always inform Prescan about your hair extensions in advance, even if you believe they do not contain metal. Mention the type of extensions you are wearing and, if you know it, the material used for attachment. We assess whether the examination can take place safely and whether the extensions might interfere with the MRI images.
