Anatomy of the Heart
The heart is a muscle approximately the size of a fist and consists of a complex system of chambers, valves, arteries and veins. The aorta, the largest artery in the body, plays a crucial role in transporting oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Within the heart, the atria and ventricles ensure that blood is efficiently received and pumped.
The blood vessels, including arteries, veins and capillaries, form a network that enables blood circulation. Oxygen in the blood is essential; it is absorbed through the lungs and transported via the bloodstream to all parts of the body.
The Essential Role of Blood Circulation
The circulatory system is vital for transporting nutrients, oxygen and other essential molecules throughout the body. It consists of two main circuits:
- Pulmonary Circulation: Carries blood from the heart to the lungs and back, where the blood is enriched with oxygen.
- Systemic Circulation: Carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to all tissues in the body and returns oxygen-poor blood to the heart.
