What are hormonal fluctuations?
Hormonal fluctuations refer to variations in hormones including oestrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH). These fluctuations are regulated through the interaction between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and ovaries.
During the normal menstrual cycle, predictable hormonal changes occur that are essential for ovulation and reproductive health. Hormonal patterns also change throughout a woman’s life, particularly during pregnancy and around menopause.
Hormonal changes throughout different stages of life
A woman’s life includes several physiological transitions during which hormone levels change:
- puberty
- pregnancy and postpartum
- perimenopause
- menopause
Around menopause, oestrogen levels decline, which can be accompanied by changes in fat distribution, lipid profile and vascular function.
