Recognizing different types of headaches

Headaches come in many different forms and can range from mild discomfort to intense pain that disrupts daily life. In this article, we discuss the most common types of headaches, their causes, and symptoms.

According to thuisarts.nl, headaches can have many different causes. Even simple factors such as poor sleep, consuming a lot of caffeine or frequently taking painkillers can contribute to headaches.

Headaches are a common complaint and can occur in different forms and levels of intensity. The causes and symptoms can vary considerably. In this article, we discuss the most common types of headaches to help you better understand their possible causes and potential solutions.

1. Tension headache

What is it?
Tension headache is the most common type of headache. It often feels like a pressing or aching pain around the forehead or on the sides and back of the head.

Causes
This type of headache is often associated with stress, fatigue, poor posture or muscle tension in the neck and shoulders.

Symptoms

  • Pressing or tight pain on both sides of the head
  • Mild to moderate in intensity
  • No nausea or vomiting

Treatment
Tension headaches can often be relieved with relaxation techniques, sufficient rest and painkillers such as paracetamol. Regular physical activity, such as yoga, may also help reduce the frequency of tension headaches.

2. Migraine

What is it?
Migraine is a neurological condition that can cause intense, throbbing headaches, often on one side of the head. Migraine attacks can last from several hours to several days and are often accompanied by other symptoms.

Causes
Although the exact cause of migraine is still unknown, genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a role. Certain triggers, such as hormonal changes, stress, specific foods and changes in the weather, can trigger an attack.

Symptoms

  • Intense, throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Sometimes a warning phase with visual disturbances (aura)

Treatment
Migraine can be treated with medication to relieve symptoms during an attack, as well as preventive medication to reduce the frequency of attacks. Avoiding known triggers, getting enough sleep and maintaining regular eating habits may also help reduce attacks. Contact your GP if you frequently experience the symptoms described above.

3. Cluster headache

What is it?
Cluster headache is a rare but extremely painful type of headache that occurs in clusters. This means attacks may occur daily for several weeks or months, followed by periods of remission that can last for months or even years.

Causes
The exact cause is unknown, but it is thought that changes in the hypothalamus may play a role. Smoking and alcohol can act as triggers in people who are already susceptible to cluster headaches.

Symptoms

  • Extremely intense, stabbing pain on one side of the head, often around the eye
  • The eye may become red and watery
  • A blocked or runny nose on the affected side
  • Attacks last between 15 minutes and 3 hours and may occur several times a day

Treatment
Medicines such as triptans can help relieve attacks, and inhaling pure oxygen may also be effective in some cases. Preventive medication may be prescribed to help reduce future attacks.

What is it?
Cluster headache is a rare but extremely painful type of headache that occurs in clusters. This means attacks may occur daily for several weeks or months, followed by periods in which they disappear completely for months or even years.

Treatment
Medication can help relieve attacks, and inhaling pure oxygen may also be effective in some cases. Preventive medication may be prescribed to help reduce future attacks. In this case, contact your GP.

4. Sinus headache

What is it?
A sinus headache is caused by inflamed or blocked sinuses in the face, often as a result of a sinus infection (sinusitis).

Causes
Bacterial or viral infections, allergies and colds can cause the sinuses to become blocked and inflamed, which may lead to headaches.

Symptoms

  • Pressure or pain in the face, especially around the nose, eyes and forehead
  • Pain that worsens when bending forward or making sudden head movements
  • A blocked or runny nose
  • Fever in the case of an infection

Treatment
Sinus headaches can often be relieved with decongestants, steam inhalation and, in some cases, antibiotics for a bacterial infection. For chronic sinus problems, an ENT specialist may recommend further treatment.

5. Medication-overuse headache

What is it?
This type of headache is caused by the overuse of headache medication, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. The body becomes accustomed to the medication, which can lead to recurring headaches when the medication is reduced or stopped.

Causes
Frequent and prolonged use of painkillers can contribute to the development of medication-overuse headache.

Symptoms

  • Constant, dull headache that is difficult to relieve
  • Headaches that worsen when the medication is reduced or stopped

Treatment
Treatment usually involves gradually reducing or stopping the medication under the supervision of a doctor. A doctor can suggest alternative ways to manage pain and help create a safe withdrawal plan.
