Headaches: possible causes
Headaches can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that affects daily life, while migraines go a step further and may involve symptoms such as intense pain, sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes visual disturbances. The causes of headaches and migraines can vary from genetic factors to external triggers such as stress, diet, sleep patterns and environmental factors. Headaches can also be caused by more serious conditions, such as a brain haemorrhage or stroke. Fortunately, headaches are often harmless and can usually be managed with medication or adequate hydration.
Different types of headaches
There are different types of headaches, including tension headaches, cluster headaches and migraines. Tension headaches, the most common type, are characterised by a constant feeling of pressure on both sides of the head. Cluster headaches are less common and cause intense, burning pain on one side of the head.
Preventive measures for headaches
Prevention may involve lifestyle changes such as regular physical activity, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, staying well hydrated and using stress-management techniques. For some people, keeping a headache diary can help identify and avoid potential triggers.
