Provides insight into

Provides insight into

A blood test for hormones provides insight into important hormones such as testosterone, LH, and SHBG.
Testosterone, produced in the testes, supports body growth, energy levels, and muscle development.
LH stimulates the production of testosterone, while SHBG binds and transports this hormone in the bloodstream.
The test helps in detecting hormonal imbalances.

It is possible that an examination may lead to incidental findings. Before the examination, Prescan will ask you whether you want to be informed about incidental findings for which follow-up or treatment is possible, as well as incidental findings related to conditions that could affect your descendants. Prescan is not allowed to inform you about incidental findings for which no follow-up or treatment is possible (see NEN 8051 standard for more information).

Parameters:
  • Testosterone: shows the total amount of testosterone in the blood, providing insight into overall hormone levels.
  • Free testosterone: the unbound testosterone available for use by the body, important for functions such as muscle development, energy, and libido.
  • LH (Luteinizing Hormone): regulates testosterone production by the testes. Abnormal LH levels may indicate a problem in the pituitary gland or testes.
  • SHBG (Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin): a protein that binds testosterone in the blood. High SHBG levels can result in less free testosterone, even if total testosterone levels are normal.

Pros and cons

Pros:
  • Early detection: It helps identify issues such as diabetes or high cholesterol early, even before you experience symptoms.
  • Health monitoring: It provides a good overview of your general health and can track any changes over time.
  • Prevention: By spotting abnormalities early, you can prevent or reduce health problems by adjusting your lifestyle.
  • Lifestyle advice: With the results, you can receive personalised advice on how to improve your health.
  • The blood test is safe and can be repeated without risk.
Cons:
  • Unnecessary concerns: Minor abnormalities may cause worry, even if they don't require immediate treatment.
  • False-positive results: The test may indicate an issue when there is actually nothing wrong, leading to extra stress and further investigations.
  • False-negative results: Sometimes problems are missed, giving a false sense of security.
  • Invasive: It requires a blood test, which can be uncomfortable or stressful for some people.

Alternatives

There are no direct alternatives available for this examination.

Risks

  • Temporary pain or discomfort at the site of the blood draw.
  • Bruising or slight swelling at the puncture site.
  • In some cases, more than usual bleeding may occur, especially in individuals with bleeding disorders or those taking blood thinners.
